The Brief

The Seattle Seahawks are set to have their fourth owners in franchise history. This change comes as the team announced the sale of the franchise to the Khosla family, including Vinod Khosla, his wife Neeru, and son Neal. The deal, which is subject to league approval, involves a reported $9.612 billion, making it an NFL-record sale. The Khoslas will join other notable owners such as the Nordstrom family, Herman Sarkowsky, Ken Behring, Ken Hofmann, and Paul G. Allen and his estate.

Neeru Khosla is named as the controlling owner of the franchise, while Neal is expected to play a significant role in the leadership group. The sale is part of a broader process that involved multiple bidders, with the Khosla family emerging as the preferred buyer.

A New Era for the Seahawks

The Nordstrom family and Herman Sarkowsky were the original owners when the team was established in 1974. Ken Behring and Ken Hofmann later purchased the club in 1988, but they sold it to Paul G. Allen in 1997 after a failed attempt to move the team to Los Angeles. Allen and his estate have since managed the franchise for the past 29 years before the recent sale to the Khosla family.

In a statement, Vinod Khosla expressed his honor at being entrusted with the Seahawks. He emphasized his commitment to building on the legacy created by Paul Allen and earning the trust of the organization and its fans.

Who is Vinod Khosla?

Vinod Khosla, 71, is a co-founder of Sun Microsystems and has a net worth estimated at around $14 billion by Forbes. Born in Pune, India, he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi. After moving to the United States in 1976, he attended Carnegie Mellon University and received an MBA from Stanford University in 1980.

Khosla has had a successful career as a venture capitalist, investing in companies like OpenAI, Square, DoorDash, and Instacart. He founded Khosla Ventures in 2004, which became an early investor in several tech startups.

Khosla is also known for his environmental advocacy, supporting initiatives like California’s Proposition 87. However, he has faced legal challenges over a property he owns in California, which led to a prolonged litigation involving access to a beachfront area.

Despite the controversy, Khosla remains committed to his principles and has expressed regret over the property purchase. He also signed the Giving Pledge, pledging at least half of his wealth to charity.

Who is Neeru Khosla?

Neeru Khosla, originally from New Delhi, spent her childhood in India and England before moving to the United States with Vinod. They married in the U.S., and together they have four children, including Neal, who will also be involved in the Seahawks’ ownership.

Neeru holds a degree in molecular biology from San Jose State University and a master’s degree in education from Stanford University. She is the co-founder and chair of the CK12 Foundation, a non-profit focused on providing free educational resources to students and teachers.

Who is Neal Khosla?

Neal Khosla, one of Vinod and Neeru’s four children, is expected to have a significant leadership role in the Seahawks’ ownership group. He double-majored in mathematics and computer science at Stanford University and earned a master’s degree in Computer Science with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence.

Neal is the CEO and co-founder of Curai, an AI-assisted telehealth company. He has also been involved with the San Francisco 49ers, where he and his father became minority owners in 2025. With the purchase of the Seahawks, they will need to divest their stake in the 49ers.

Who Else is Involved?

The sale agreement includes the Khosla family and several unnamed limited partners. The process was managed by Allen & Co., which reported strong interest in the franchise. The Khosla family currently owns a limited partner interest in the 49ers and would need to divest that stake.

The NFL has already vetted the Khoslas, and the league will continue to review the transaction. Ownership rules require the majority owner to hold at least a 30% stake and limit the number of partners to 25.

Final Thoughts

The sale of the Seattle Seahawks marks a significant shift in the team’s ownership structure. With the Khosla family taking the reins, the franchise is poised for a new era under their leadership. As the league reviews the transaction, fans and stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how this change impacts the future of the team.
