Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday with a Time Capsule

Across the United States, events are being held to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday. One of the most unique aspects of this celebration is the creation of a time capsule that will be buried and reopened in 250 years. This special project aims to preserve a snapshot of American history for future generations.

Each state has contributed an item representing its heritage, with New Hampshire playing a significant role in this effort. U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who is part of the committee that developed the idea for the time capsule, emphasized the state’s deep historical roots as a key factor in selecting what to include.

“New Hampshire was the ninth state. We were the state that finally determined that we were going to have a United States of America,” Shaheen explained. “We were one of the first 13 colonies, fought in the Revolution.”

Given the state’s pivotal role in the Revolutionary War, the New Hampshire Historical Society created a sticker inspired by two rare Revolutionary War flags. These flags feature the 13 colonies as interlocking links in a gold chain beneath the words, “We Are One.” The design was crafted by Benjamin Franklin.

“They were really trying to reinforce this idea of unity, because in unity was their only chance of beating Great Britain and having their independence,” said Elizabeth Dubrulle, director of education and public programs for the New Hampshire Historical Society. “They’re the only set of Revolutionary War flags left in the world.”

The flags were captured by the British in 1777 and remained lost for over 130 years. They were rediscovered in 1907 and purchased by New Hampshire native Edward Tuck, who later donated them to the historical society. Due to their rarity, the originals will remain at the society, but the sticker included in the time capsule carries the same message: “We Are One.”

“I think it’s a good message for us to remember today,” Dubrulle said. “That’s one of the reasons why we chose it, because we wanted to remind everyone that in this anniversary celebration, we are one people.”

While no one can predict what the country will look like in 250 years, organizers hope the time capsule will serve as a meaningful reminder of this moment in American history.

“We’re the oldest democracy in the world. There are so many reasons to celebrate,” Dubrulle said. “For all the challenges that America has had, we have still represented the best hope for millions and millions of people for better lives.”

“It was a way to bring people together in the country. I hope we will see that as part of this celebration,” Shaheen added.

The time capsule will be buried on July 4 at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia and will remain sealed until America’s 500th birthday in 2276.
