Special Election for California’s 14th Congressional District Heads to Runoff

The special election for the House seat previously held by former California Rep. Eric Swalwell (D) has moved into a runoff, as no candidate received a majority of the votes in the initial contest. According to projections from DDHQ, the race will now be decided on August 18 between two top Democratic candidates: California state Sen. Aisha Wahab and Bay Area transportation official Melissa Hernandez.

This runoff will determine who will represent California’s 14th Congressional District until the end of the year. The winner of this contest will then go on to compete in the November general election for a full term in Congress.

Leading Candidates and Their Support

In the initial voting, Wahab secured around 43 percent of the vote, while Hernandez received approximately 17 percent. Another Democratic candidate, lawyer Rakhi Israni Singh, garnered about 13 percent of the support. Both Wahab and Hernandez have already qualified for the November election, where they will again face off for a full-term position in the district.

In the state’s primary election, Wahab received roughly 38 percent of the vote, with Hernandez securing 17 percent. These numbers highlight the close competition between the two candidates, even before the runoff is decided.

Background on the Candidates

Swalwell, who represented the district in the U.S. House, stepped down in April after allegations of sexual misconduct were brought against him. He also withdrew from the California gubernatorial race, which he had been leading. However, he has denied all the allegations.

Aisha Wahab, who made history as the first Afghan American woman elected to public office in the United States, is running on a platform focused on affordability and sustainability. In addition to her role as a state senator, she serves as the assistant majority leader in the California legislature.

Melissa Hernandez, a former mayor of Dublin, California, is campaigning on issues such as addressing rising housing costs and promoting immigration reform. Her experience in local government has positioned her as a strong contender in the race.

Progressive Support for Wahab

The Progressive Caucus PAC, an organization dedicated to electing progressive candidates to Congress, has shown strong support for Wahab in the special election. The group praised her performance in the initial round of voting, calling it a “landslide 1st place finish” in the #CA14 special primary.

In a social media post, the Progressive Caucus PAC stated:

“Congratulations to @aishabbwahab on her continued momentum with a landslide 1st place finish in the #CA14 special primary! We will continue to support Aisha as she runs on her record of accomplishments through the August runoff & can’t wait to serve alongside her in Congress!”

What’s Next?

As the race moves toward the August 18 runoff, both candidates are expected to intensify their campaigns. Voters in California’s 14th Congressional District will have a crucial decision to make, as the outcome of this contest will shape the future representation of the district in Congress.

With the upcoming runoff, the political landscape in the district remains dynamic, and the final results could have significant implications for both the special election and the November general election.
