Health Officials in Galveston County Issue Warning After Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Health officials in Galveston County are urging residents to take extra precautions when handling and consuming fresh produce. This warning comes after 14 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis were reported, according to a recent statement from the local health district.

Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection that primarily affects the small intestine. It is typically spread through contaminated food or water and can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fatigue, and stomach cramps. The illness often lasts for several weeks and may require medical treatment.

Investigation Underway

The Galveston County Health District has launched an investigation into the recent spike in cyclosporiasis cases. As of now, they have confirmed 14 cases, with four more currently under review. While no specific source has been identified yet, officials are working closely with local and state health departments to trace the origin of the outbreak.

Health officials emphasize that the best way to prevent infection is by practicing good hygiene and food safety habits. They recommend washing all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption, even if they appear to be clean. This step is crucial because the parasite can survive on the surface of produce and may not be visible to the naked eye.

Preventive Measures

In addition to washing produce, health professionals advise residents to:

  • Wash hands with soap before preparing or eating food, and after using the restroom. This helps reduce the risk of spreading the parasite.
  • Avoid consuming raw or undercooked foods that may be contaminated.
  • Stay hydrated if experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea, as dehydration can be a serious complication.

Residents who experience symptoms of cyclosporiasis should seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can help alleviate discomfort and prevent the spread of the infection to others.

Public Awareness Campaign

As part of their efforts to inform the public, the Galveston County Health District is encouraging community members to stay informed about the outbreak. Local health officials are also providing guidance on how to recognize the signs of cyclosporiasis and what steps to take if they suspect they have been infected.

While the exact source of the outbreak remains unknown, officials believe it is likely linked to contaminated food products. They are working to identify any common sources among the affected individuals to better understand the scope of the issue.

Ongoing Monitoring

The health district continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available. Residents are encouraged to check official channels for the latest developments and recommendations.

By following simple hygiene practices and staying vigilant, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of contracting cyclosporiasis. The health district remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Galveston County residents.
