Introducing Fire Camp: A Hands-On Experience for Future Firefighters

Around 80 kids are getting a taste of what it means to be a firefighter through Fire Camp, an annual summer program organized by Sac Metro Fire. This event is designed to introduce children to the fire service by offering them real-life experiences that mirror the daily responsibilities of firefighters.

Over the course of four days, participants engage in a variety of activities that help them understand the skills required in the profession. These include learning how to use a fire extinguisher, handling a fire hose, climbing a 105-foot aerial ladder, and practicing hands-only CPR. The camp provides a unique opportunity for kids to explore their interests in a field that may one day become their career.

Many of the firefighters currently serving in the region were once campers themselves. For some, Fire Camp is the first step toward pursuing a career in emergency services. For others, it serves as a way to reinforce their passion for becoming a firefighter.

“I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter,” said camper Alex Camper. “My dad’s a firefighter, and my brother wants to be one too. It just runs in the family, and I really want to follow in their footsteps.”

Campers are divided into “strike teams” of eight members, each guided and supported by two professional firefighters. This structure allows for personalized attention and mentorship, helping kids build confidence and develop teamwork skills.

“At first, I was really nervous,” shared camper Zion Coller. “But now I feel more confident in myself, and it’s been a really fun experience. I would definitely recommend this to kids who are 11 years old.”

Volunteers from Sac Metro Fire play a crucial role in making the camp possible each year. Their efforts ensure that every child has a memorable and educational experience. Many volunteers find the most rewarding part of the program to be witnessing the growth of the participants.

“You see the starting point where they begin to understand what it means to be a firefighter,” said volunteer Vlad Tovstokor. “They come here, meet the firefighters, and get to see the equipment they use every day. It gives them a chance to become familiar with emergency situations and the importance of quick action.”

Fire Camp is open to children aged 11, 12, and 13, and it consistently fills up every year due to high demand. The program not only educates but also inspires young minds to consider a future in public service.

Benefits of Fire Camp

  • Skill Development: Kids learn essential firefighting skills such as using a fire extinguisher and handling a fire hose.
  • Teamwork Building: Being part of a strike team encourages collaboration and communication among participants.
  • Confidence Boost: Many campers report feeling more confident after completing the program.
  • Career Inspiration: Fire Camp can spark an interest in the fire service or reinforce existing aspirations.

Who Can Participate?

Fire Camp is specifically designed for children between the ages of 11 and 13. This age range is chosen to ensure that participants are mature enough to handle the activities while still being open to new experiences and learning opportunities.

Community Involvement

The success of Fire Camp relies heavily on the support of local volunteers and community members. Their contributions make it possible for the program to continue and grow each year.
