Salem School District Announces New Superintendent
SALEM, MA — The Salem School District has taken a significant step toward selecting its next leader. Boston Public Schools Associate Superintendent Thomas Welch is set to become the new superintendent of the Salem School District, pending successful contract negotiations. This decision comes after the Salem School Committee voted to offer Welch the position following a thorough evaluation of three finalists.
During the meeting on Wednesday night, the School Committee members spent about half an hour discussing the three candidates. Initially, there was some support for Brighton Head of School and former Brookline Superintendent Andrew Bott. However, the final vote ended with a 6-1 decision in favor of Welch.
Welch has been serving as a Regional School Superintendent/Associate Superintendent for Boston Public Schools since 2015. His career also includes a role as the Academic Superintendent for the district’s Alternative Schools Network from 2018 to 2019. Before joining Boston Public Schools, he was the founding Principal of Nava College Preparatory High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Vision and Values
School Committee member Veronica Miranda expressed her support for Welch, highlighting his focus on students being known and his commitment to equity. She emphasized that Welch’s vision aligns with the district’s goals of creating safe and inclusive learning environments.
“His comments around equity, beginning with instructional equality, resonated with me,” Miranda said. “Our schools need to be places where every student feels safe and seen. And our community should be active partners in this work.”
Miranda also praised Welch’s dedication to protecting dual-language education while ensuring it remains financially sustainable. She noted his clear understanding of district-wide planning and his desire to build strong relationships with both the school committee and the community.
Community Support and Experience
School Committee member Mary Beth Cornell nominated Welch after the initial discussion did not produce a clear candidate. Two other members cited apparent support from the school community for Welch’s candidacy.
“I appreciate his experience, particularly in urban districts,” Cornell said. “Particularly with bilingual education. I also appreciate his approach to community outreach.”
Cornell added, “I can see him in this community.”
Educational Background
Welch brings a strong educational background to his new role. He holds an Ed.D. from Boston College’s Professional School Administrator Program, an M.A. in Education from UCLA, and a B.A. in Economics and Environmental Studies from Occidental College.
Transitioning Leadership
Welch will replace Steve Zrike, who left the district after six years this spring to become the state Secretary of Education. His appointment marks a transition for the Salem School District as it seeks to continue its mission of providing quality education to all students.
