The Future of Tailoring: AI and Custom Fashion

What do you call a tailor without a tape measure? At Sumissura, this question is no longer hypothetical. The online tailoring platform for women is redefining the industry by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the custom clothing experience. This innovative approach not only streamlines the process but also brings a new level of accuracy and convenience to customers.

Sumissura, a Swiss company founded in 2013, has been at the forefront of made-to-measure fashion for women. From dresses and blazers to suits and shoes, the company has always focused on creating bespoke garments that fit perfectly. Now, it’s taking another step forward with the introduction of a groundbreaking feature that allows users to create a 3D digital body profile using just three pieces of information: height, weight, and age.

The AI system uses these data points to predict the necessary measurements for a body profile, which the user can then review and adjust as needed. Once finalized, this profile is saved in the user’s account, making future orders faster and more accurate—without the need for manual measuring.

This marks a significant shift for Sumissura, as it continues to explore the potential of AI beyond just estimating body measurements. The fashion industry has been increasingly embracing AI in various ways, from backend operations and generative design to customer-facing services like chatbots and concierges. As the technology evolves, so does the possibility of expanding its role within the company.

“In a world where the fashion industry forces people to fit into boxes, we make clients feel confident and secure with bespoke garments,” said Nancy Peyer, the company’s marketing manager. This sentiment highlights Sumissura’s commitment to providing personalized experiences that cater to individual needs rather than generic trends.

Custom fashion has a long history, dating back to ancient times. However, Sumissura’s AI-driven approach is bringing the business into the modern age, merging traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. This fusion not only preserves the art of tailoring but also makes it more accessible and efficient for today’s consumers.

Once an order is placed, the chosen fabric or material is cut and prepared before being handed over to artisans. According to the company’s website, these skilled craftsmen and craftswomen are based in regions known for their long-standing traditions in their crafts:

  • Shoes are crafted in Spain.
  • Suits, shirts, and jackets are made in Shanghai.
  • Jeans are produced in Shandong.

By maintaining control over its production facilities, Sumissura avoids many of the issues that plague fast fashion brands. These include overproduction, unsold inventory, and the use of sweatshop labor. Instead, the company focuses on quality, sustainability, and ethical practices.

“In an era dominated by fast fashion, we’re bombarded with fleeting trends and disposable garments. But at what cost? Fast fashion not only wreaks havoc on the environment but also dilutes personal style, pushing one-size-fits-all trends that rarely fit anyone perfectly,” said Alberto Gil, co-founder of Sumissura, in 2020.

As the fashion industry continues to evolve, companies like Sumissura are setting a new standard. By leveraging AI and emphasizing craftsmanship, they are not only meeting the demands of modern consumers but also addressing the challenges of sustainability and ethical production.

With ongoing investments in technology and a focus on innovation, Sumissura is poised to lead the way in the future of custom fashion. Whether through AI-driven measurements or traditional artisanal techniques, the company remains committed to delivering high-quality, personalized garments that reflect the unique styles and needs of its customers.
