New Retail Development Set to Boost Growth in Oldham County

Oldham County is set for a major retail expansion as leaders have approved plans for the Buckner Commons development. This project, which marks a significant step in the county’s ongoing growth, was given the green light at a recent meeting of the Oldham County Planning Commission on June 23. The development spans over 30 acres along Commerce Parkway and Highway 393, promising to bring a range of new businesses and services to the area.

The Buckner Commons development will include:

  • A 101,504 square foot home improvement store
  • A 55,453 square foot grocery store with an attached 3,200 square foot liquor store
  • Hundreds of parking spaces
  • Six outparcels near the road that could be used for other potential businesses

While the specific businesses that will occupy the buildings have not been officially announced, the site is being developed by Prime Property Development. Developers involved in the project stated during the meeting that commitments have already been made.

Despite the general support for the project, one member of the commission, Berry Hampton, voted against the development. He expressed concerns about the proposed construction timeline, stating that it seemed unrealistic.

“I like the development a lot, but I think it’s unrealistic … the proposed construction dates,” Hampton said at the meeting.

Sandy Hamilton, president of the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce, sees the investment as a positive step for the area.

“We’re excited about it. It’s great for Oldham County,” Hamilton said. “That whole area is filling up nicely, and we love the growth.”

This development comes as Oldham County continues to experience steady growth. Other projects are also underway in the region, including a new bank and space for an auto manufacturing plant just across the street from the Buckner Commons site.

Kevin Jeffries, a magistrate in Oldham County, has observed how the adage “retail follows rooftops” is playing out in the area.

“As you get more homes built and apartments and those kinds of things, then that draws more of these companies into the county,” Jeffries said.

In Crestwood, workers are currently in the first phase of constructing units in a large mixed-use development called Clore Station. This project, similar to Norton Commons, includes a master plan for 3,000 residential units. Additionally, work continues on a new hospital in the same area.

In La Grange, “Oldham Reserve” is another mixed-use development that has been in the works for 20 years.

“Oldham County is continuing to grow. We’re at a little over 70,000 population now,” Jeffries said. “I think these companies are looking at Oldham County as a place they want to be.”

Developers hope to begin construction on the grocery store and home improvement store at the end of this year. The retailers who have committed to the spaces aim to open by 2028.

As Oldham County continues to expand, the Buckner Commons development represents a key milestone in the region’s economic and commercial growth. With new retail options and ongoing infrastructure projects, the area is poised for continued progress.
