UN Report Accuses Israel of Targeting Children in Gaza

A recent report by the United Nations has accused Israel of committing “inhuman war crimes” by deliberately targeting children in the Gaza Strip during its ongoing conflict with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which began in 2023. This accusation comes amid increasing tensions and military actions by Israel in Lebanon, which could have implications for potential peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.

According to reports from Reuters and other outlets, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry released a detailed investigation on October 23rd, focusing on human rights violations against children in Gaza since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. The commission found that the Israeli military used high-caliber ammunition and other weapons in densely populated residential areas, despite a significant increase in child casualties. It noted that children were targeted because the Israeli military assumed all civilians in Gaza were affiliated with armed groups like Hamas.

The report revealed that at least 20,179 children died in Gaza between October 2023, when the war began, and October of last year, when a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement was initiated. This number accounts for approximately 30% of all fatalities in the Gaza Strip during that period. In previous conflicts between Israel and Hamas, such as those in 2008–2009 and 2014, children made up around 24% of total casualties.

The commission also stated that Palestinian children continued to be targeted and killed even after the ceasefire began in October of last year. It emphasized that repeated forced displacement, blockades of aid, and food shortages caused by the war have had a severe impact on children’s health and development.

Srinivasan Muralidhar, chair of the commission, said in a statement, “By targeting children, Israel is undermining the Palestinian people’s ability to survive and determine their own future.”

In a September 2025 report, the commission previously concluded that Israel committed acts of genocide in Gaza and that high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, incited such actions.

In response, Israel’s Permanent Mission to Geneva called the allegations “malicious falsehoods.” Israel claims it has consistently tried to minimize child casualties even during wartime and criticized the UN for not addressing Hamas’s actions.
