The World Cup has captured the attention of fans worldwide, and South Korea’s national team has made a significant impact in Group A. On June 12, the team delivered a thrilling 2-1 victory against the Czech Republic at Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico. However, their journey was not without challenges, as they faced a tough 0-1 loss to Mexico on June 19. Despite the disappointment, the public remained supportive, praising the team for their strong performance. The World Cup has become a unifying force for the nation, bringing people together in celebration of their national team.

On June 19, citizens gathered at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul to show their support for the South Korean team. Chants of “South Korea~” echoed through the square as people of all ages and genders came together to cheer for their country. Police estimated that around 20,000 people attended the event. Most participants wore red clothing, headbands, and Red Devils masks, creating a sea of red that symbolized national pride. Despite the scorching heat—temperatures reached 34 degrees Celsius—supporters remained steadfast in their enthusiasm. One citizen who took time off work shared, “I came early in the morning to create memories with my child,” while another expressed hope that their cheers would help the team advance to the Round of 16.

Although the team lost to Mexico on that day, there was no sign of anger or frustration among the crowd. In fact, some citizens even greeted Mexican fans who were celebrating their victory with warm congratulations. This spirit of camaraderie highlights how soccer has the power to unite people across different backgrounds. The passion for the game has brought the nation closer, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

Looking ahead, South Korea will face South Africa in their final Group A match on June 25 at 10 a.m. This game will be crucial for determining the team’s next steps in the tournament. Fans are already preparing for the match, hoping for a strong performance from their national squad. As the World Cup continues, the spirit of unity and support shown by the public remains a testament to the deep connection between the people and their national team.
