Recent Black Bear Sightings in Massachusetts

Recent reports have confirmed the presence of a black bear in a new area of Massachusetts, marking another instance of wildlife interaction with local communities. The sightings occurred on Saturday in Stoughton, a town located on the opposite side of Route 24 from previous encounters. Local police in Stoughton have issued statements urging residents to maintain a safe distance from the animal and avoid any direct contact.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police were also notified about the bear’s movements. According to police, the bear was spotted on Third Street, specifically on the Park Street side, and later seen in the vicinity of Lincoln and Porter streets. Authorities have emphasized that individuals engaging in outdoor activities should remain vigilant and be aware of the bear’s presence in the area.

Continued Encounters in Nearby Towns

This latest incident follows a series of close encounters in neighboring towns, raising concerns among residents and officials alike. In Avon and Randolph, several residents reported seeing and photographing the bear near Route 28 and North Main Street along the Avon-Randolph town line on Wednesday night. These sightings were confirmed by Animal Control officers, who also noted additional reports in the area of DeMarco Park and D.W. Field Park on Thursday.

On Friday, Avon police took further action by closing DW Field Parkway and the gates at South Street due to the bear’s presence. The closure extended to D.W. Field Park, with authorities advising the public to avoid the area until the situation is resolved. A statement from the police highlighted the importance of staying out of the park to allow for safe handling of the situation by authorities and wildlife officials.

Community Response and Safety Measures

NewsCenter 5 visited the affected communities on Friday and gathered accounts of additional sightings as the bear continues its search for food. One woman, who approached a NewsCenter 5 photographer, shared her experience of witnessing a bear cross the street in front of her car. Such incidents underscore the need for caution and awareness among residents.

Animal Control officials have provided specific guidelines for dealing with the situation. They advise against approaching or following the bear and recommend keeping a close eye on pets. Additionally, they suggest securing trash barrels, chicken coops, and removing bird feeders until the bear moves through the area.

Reporting Sightings and Emergency Procedures

Residents are encouraged to report any sightings to local police, animal control, or the Massachusetts Environmental Police at the number 800-632-8075. It is important to note that 911 should only be used in cases of immediate emergencies.

Ongoing Monitoring and Public Awareness

As the bear continues to roam through different areas, local authorities are working closely with wildlife officials to monitor the situation and ensure public safety. The ongoing presence of the black bear highlights the challenges of coexistence between humans and wildlife, particularly in regions where urban and natural habitats intersect.

Local news outlets continue to provide updates on the bear’s movements and any developments in the situation. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow the guidance provided by law enforcement and environmental agencies.

Additional Information

For those interested in staying updated on local news, weather, and sports, online platforms offer real-time coverage and detailed reports. Community members are encouraged to participate in local discussions and share their experiences to help build a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

By maintaining vigilance and adhering to safety protocols, residents can help ensure the well-being of both themselves and the wildlife in their area.
