The 2026 World Cup, which began just 25 days ago, has already seen 48 teams compete in a thrilling race to become the champion of soccer’s most prestigious tournament. After three and a half weeks of intense competition, the event is now approaching the conclusion of its second knockout round. This stage will reduce the number of teams vying for the World Cup trophy to just eight, with the final set to take place on Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

Key Updates from the Round of 16

Several high-profile matches have already taken place in the round of 16, with notable performances from some of the top players in the world. Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, two of the leading contenders for the Golden Boot, have already made their mark. Mbappé scored all of France’s goals in their 1-0 victory over Paraguay, while Haaland found the back of the net twice as Norway defeated Brazil 2-1. These results have solidified their positions as key players in the quarterfinals.

Looking ahead, there are still four open slots in the quarterfinals, with one of them potentially being claimed by the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) against Belgium.
