The Future of Big Little Lies

After years of speculation about the return of Big Little Lies at HBO, the possibility of a third season is becoming more tangible. Star Reese Witherspoon recently shared an update that has sparked renewed interest in the show’s potential comeback. While the greenlight hasn’t been officially given yet, Witherspoon’s latest hints suggest that the show may be on the verge of making a return.

HBO’s social media accounts have also been sharing clips and moments from the series, which adds to the excitement surrounding the potential new season. Below, we’re breaking down everything we know so far about the show’s progress and what to expect as the next episodes take shape.

Has Big Little Lies Season 3 Been Ordered?

Although Big Little Lies Season 3 is in the works, it hasn’t been officially ordered or announced by HBO. Fans are advised to stay tuned for any official updates in the coming months. Witherspoon reignited interest in the show’s return with a post on social media where she shared several photos from 2016 with the caption, “2016. Bringing back BIG memories with some of my fav people,” implying that she’s bringing back Big Little Lies.

She later reconfirmed the show’s potential return after a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she told the host, “It is in process for sure.” When asked for more details, Witherspoon mentioned that Liane Moriarty’s upcoming book would serve as the inspiration for Season 3’s plot. “We are making the TV show based on that book,” she reassured.

What Would Big Little Lies Season 3 Be About?

As mentioned earlier, Big Little Lies’ third season would follow the events of Liane Moriarty’s forthcoming novel, titled Big Little Truths. The book is set to release in August 2026 and reportedly features a time jump, tracking the Monterey moms as they parent teenagers. It’s unclear how this will carry on the story from Season 2, which saw the women known as the Monterey Five seemingly preparing to share the real story of events surrounding Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgard) death, as viewers may recall he was memorably pushed to his death in Season 1’s finale.

Casey Bloys, the chairman of HBO and HBO Max, confirmed these details in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating, “This is a really dedicated group of producers. They love the show and the property, and Liane Moriarty has a new book. It’s been 10 years, and the kids from Big Little Lies are teenagers. As the parent of teenagers, I can tell you that it does get more complicated raising teenagers.”

Who Is Making Big Little Lies Season 3?

Season 3 of Big Little Lies is being written by Francesca Sloane, who recently signed a deal with HBO. As mentioned above, Kidman and Witherspoon are set to executive produce the show with series creator David E. Kelley, according to Deadline. Sloane is also attached as an executive producer.

Upcoming Premiere

The premiere date for Big Little Lies Season 3 remains to be announced. However, fans can look forward to more updates as the production continues to take shape. Stay tuned for any official announcements from HBO as the show moves closer to its potential return.
