A Major Upset at Wimbledon

Ben Shelton arrived at Wimbledon as the fourth seed and one of the leading American hopes for a deep run at the All England Club. However, the left-hander suffered a shocking 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 defeat to qualifier Otto Virtanen in a match that lasted four hours and 21 minutes. This was one of the biggest surprises of the tournament, and Shelton described it as one of his worst defeats in his career.

Former US Open champion Andy Roddick admitted he was stunned by the result. The multiple Wimbledon finalist had expected his young compatriot to make a deep run on the fastest surface. Instead, Shelton fell to a player ranked world no. 140, exiting much earlier than anticipated.

This loss was a major opportunity for Shelton to make a name for himself again in London, and Roddick believes the defeat should serve as an important learning experience for the 23-year-old.

Andy Expected Much More from Ben

Roddick revealed that he had expected an American to reach the Wimbledon final, believing Shelton and Fritz had the best chance to achieve that goal. Instead, a left-hander fell on the first hurdle after missing his chances in the pivotal moments against the Finn. In Andy’s opinion, Shelton’s defeat to Otto requires serious reflection from the player himself and his team.

The former world no. 1 also questioned some of Shelton’s tactical choices during the encounter. He suggested the young gun failed to recognize the patterns developing on court. Roddick pointed to several questionable decisions by the world no. 5, including unnecessary drop shots, feeling the American never truly found the right solutions for Virtanen’s game.

A Setback That Could Help Shelton Grow

Ben has not played well on the biggest stages in 2026 following the Australian Open quarter-final. Despite the criticism, Roddick emphasized that his compatriot possesses all the tools needed to become one of the sport’s biggest stars. He reminded fans that Shelton has followed an unconventional development path, only beginning to travel in January 2023 and focusing on American events and college tennis before that.

Roddick believes Shelton still has valuable experience to gain on different surfaces and in challenging situations. Nevertheless, he admitted the Wimbledon defeat would be deeply disappointing for the young left-hander, considering the expectations surrounding his grass-court campaign.

“It’s a real shame not to see any Americans in the Wimbledon semi-final. If you watched our show about the draw at the start of the tournament, you would have seen I was pretty sure we would have an American in the final. Ben Shelton was playing very well, but he lost to a qualifier, Otto Virtanen, ranked 150th in the world. You are ranked fourth or fifth in the world. When you lose a match like that, you have to take a hard look at yourself.

I do not think he recognized the game patterns. He hit some strange drop shots and made some questionable game decisions. Ben has everything it takes to succeed. He never left the country before going to Australia in 2023. He is not one of those players who was competing in junior tournaments from the age of 11. I will give him some leniency on that front, but it must be disappointing for him,” Andy Roddick said.
