The NFL Community Warns Against Acquiring Brandon Aiyuk
Multiple members of the NFL community have raised concerns about the Washington Commanders and other teams potentially acquiring current San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. These warnings come after Aiyuk has generated significant headlines through a series of social media videos that have sparked worries about his behavior and attitude.
A Coach’s Strong Warning
Former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who has a history of serving as Aiyuk’s personal coach, recently shared a strong warning on the “Speakeasy” podcast. Houshmandzadeh addressed Commanders general manager Adam Peters and quarterback Jayden Daniels, urging them to avoid signing Aiyuk.
“Adam Peters, you sign Brandon Aiyuk, the Commanders should fire you the day you sign him,” Houshmandzadeh said. “What makes y’all any different than the San Francisco 49ers? You don’t think he going to do to you what he’s doing to them? I don’t understand this. If I’m Jayden Daniels, B.A. is my boy. If it doesn’t work out, is he still going to be my boy? So do I even want to see if it will work out? Because I may ruin a relationship over sports.”
Aiyuk’s Social Media Controversy
Aiyuk has been vocal in recent social media videos, criticizing the 49ers and expressing frustration over the team’s decision to sign him to a four-year, $120M contract extension in the summer of 2024. He has also suggested that the team is “scared” to release him, which has further fueled speculation about his future with the franchise.
Aiyuk has not played for the 49ers since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2024. In response to his lack of participation in rehab sessions, the club voided the remaining guaranteed money attached to his extension.
Past Connections and Current Concerns
Peters was working for the 49ers when they selected Aiyuk during the 2020 draft. Additionally, Aiyuk and Daniels were teammates at Arizona State. Despite these connections, some reports indicate that the Commanders have reservations about pursuing Aiyuk following his social media activity.
Aiyuk’s Future with the 49ers
The 49ers are expected to release Aiyuk if he petitions the league office for reinstatement from the reserve/left squad list and then reports to the team for training camp in late July. Houshmandzadeh believes Aiyuk should stay off Instagram and other social media platforms for the foreseeable future.
“He might not step foot in an NFL stadium again if he don’t shut the [expletive] up,” Houshmandzadeh added about Aiyuk.
What’s Next for Aiyuk?
It remains to be seen whether Aiyuk will follow Houshmandzadeh’s advice or if the Commanders will pursue other options at the wide receiver position. As the NFL season approaches, all eyes will be on Aiyuk’s next moves and how the league handles his situation.
