Portland Pride Waterfront Festival and Parade Set to Attract Thousands

Tens of thousands of people are expected to gather downtown for the Portland Pride Waterfront Festival and Parade this Sunday. The event is a vibrant celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, drawing participants and spectators from across the region.

The parade will kick off at 11 a.m. at Northwest Broadway and Davis Street. It will then march east along Naito Parkway before heading south toward the Portland Pride Waterfront Festival. The parade will conclude at Southwest Harvey Milk Street and Naito Parkway, offering attendees a chance to enjoy the festivities in a central location.

A Long History of Celebration

Pride celebrations have been a part of Portland’s cultural fabric since the 1970s. The first organized waterfront festival took place in 1994, marking the beginning of an annual tradition that continues to grow in size and significance. This year, approximately 164 groups are anticipated to participate in the parade, showcasing a wide range of organizations, performers, and community members.

Live Streaming Options Available

For those unable to attend in person, the parade will be available for live streaming. KGW will provide coverage on its website, KGW.com, as well as through its YouTube channel, mobile app, and various streaming platforms such as Roku and Amazon Fire TV. This ensures that even those who cannot make it to the event can still experience the energy and spirit of the parade.

Festival Activities and Schedule

The festival itself will take place at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, extending down Naito Parkway from just north of Ash Street to the Morrison Bridge. Attendees can look forward to a variety of activities, including food vendors, booths from local businesses and organizations, and numerous live stage performances.

Headliners for this year’s festival include Deja Skye, Tenderoni, and Lushious Massacr. A full lineup of performers can be found online, allowing visitors to plan their day around their favorite acts.

The festival will run from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Organizers encourage attendees to make a $10 donation at one of the gate entrances; however, no one will be turned away due to an inability to pay. This policy reflects the inclusive and welcoming nature of the event.

Timing and Cultural Significance

Portland Pride is held in July to avoid overlapping with other significant cultural events in the city. Pride Northwest, the organization responsible for coordinating the festival, made the decision to move the event to July to ensure it stands out as a unique and important celebration. This timing allows for a more focused and impactful experience for all participants.

Conclusion

The Portland Pride Waterfront Festival and Parade offer a colorful and dynamic celebration of diversity, inclusion, and community. Whether attending in person or watching from home, there are plenty of ways to engage with the spirit of Pride and support the ongoing efforts of the LGBTQ+ community in Portland.
