A Tragic Case of Family Violence

A 33-year-old woman is accused of killing her parents in what prosecutors describe as a premeditated and brutal act. The case has shocked the community and raised questions about the circumstances that led to such a tragic event.

Michelle Zajko has been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder for the deaths of her parents in 2022, according to officials who announced the charges on Wednesday. In addition to these serious charges, she faces other counts including criminal homicide and conspiracy to commit criminal homicide.

Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse expressed his disbelief at the events that led to the tragedy during a press conference on Wednesday. “I can’t wrap my mind around or figure out what led to this point. We are clearly talking about someone that has gone down an unimaginably dark road and has led to a tragedy that just defies any sort of description,” he said.

According to Rouse, investigators believe the killings occurred on New Year’s Eve of 2022 in Pennsylvania. It was also revealed that Michelle Zajko had been estranged from her parents before the murders. This tension between mother and daughter appears to have played a significant role in the events that followed.

Rita Zajko, the victim’s mother, had reached out to her daughter on her birthday, which coincided with New Year’s Eve, apologizing for their rift and seeking to mend their relationship. However, this message went unanswered by Michelle Zajko, as reported by Rouse.

Rouse stated that there was ample time after the message was sent for Michelle Zajko to travel to Pennsylvania, where the murders were committed. Visual evidence showed a car approaching the Zajko home hours after the message was sent, with at least two individuals, including Michelle Zajko, exiting the vehicle.

Audio evidence captured a voice saying “Mom” outside the home before the two entered, according to Rouse. He noted that Michelle Zajko is the couple’s only child.

Ballistics evidence collected from the scene was connected to shell casings found in the backyard of her home in Vermont. However, the firearm used in the killings has not yet been located.

Rouse mentioned that there appeared to be some planning involved in the murders, including the purchase of the firearm about a year before the killings, practice rounds fired in the backyard of Michelle Zajko’s home, and evidence that Michelle Zajko and her alleged coconspirator had arranged for someone to send texts from their phones, which they had left behind.

Investigators also found text messages on Michelle Zajko’s phone listing things she believed could have been done differently in the killing. There was also a list of things that had been done wrong in the murder, including not removing the shell casings from the scene, Rouse said.

“We are finally at the point where we can say beyond any doubt that Michelle Zajko was at least in part responsible for the death of her parents. She did not act alone. At this time, we do not know who her co-conspirators were, but we are very certain that Michelle Zajko was in the home and arranged for the death of her parents,” Rouse said.

“We don’t have a smoking gun. It is piece after piece after piece of evidence that has been collected painstakingly over years,” Rouse added.
