New Details Emerge in Tragic Bahamas Plane Crash

A tragic plane crash in the Bahamas has left 10 people dead, including a 16-year-old who was among those on board. The revelation came to light as investigators and families worked through the difficult process of identifying the victims.

Joshua Williams, a broadcast reporter with Our News in the Bahamas, shared this information with WALB. He noted that the teen’s presence on the flight was disclosed on Saturday. While officials have not officially released the names of the victims, Williams mentioned that the Bahamas’ police commissioner confirmed that authorities are aware of their identities but are keeping them private until next-of-kin notifications and other procedures are completed.

The crash occurred in Andros, where the aircraft was carrying passengers traveling to a local regatta or homecoming festival. In response to the tragedy, the country’s prime minister visited Andros on Saturday to meet with residents and organizers.

Williams also reported that early accounts suggested there was one survivor, but that individual later passed away. The remains of the victims were transported back to Nassau late Friday night into early Saturday morning. Williams and his team remained at the airport past 1 a.m. as the victims were brought back.

He added that members of a well-known Bahamian band were on the flight. The country has seen an outpouring of condolences, especially from the entertainment and religious communities. Some of the victims were also involved in church life as musicians.

Investigation Underway

As investigators work to determine the cause of the crash, Flamingo Air has been grounded. Officials temporarily suspended the airline’s certification following the fatal crash and an earlier incident involving another Flamingo Air flight on the same morning.

The Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority’s accident investigation body emphasized its goal is to uncover what happened and prevent similar tragedies, rather than assigning blame.

WALB will continue to follow updates from officials in the Bahamas as the investigation progresses. If you have a news tip or notice an error that needs correction, please let us know. Be sure to include the article’s headline in your message.
