Netflix Producer’s Poignant 6-Word Message to Shipwrecked Victim

A Netflix producer made a powerful connection with a survivor of the Costa Concordia disaster, breaking the fourth wall to deliver a heartfelt message. The streaming service’s new documentary, Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea, released on July 10, delves into the 2012 cruise ship crash off the coast of Italy. Through the victims’ personal accounts and translated phone conversations, the film presents a harrowing narrative of the Costa Concordia tragedy that claimed 32 lives, including a five-year-old child.

On January 13, 2012, just two hours after departing from the port of Civitavecchia at 7:18 p.m., the vessel veered off course and struck Scole Rocks near the island of Giglio. This collision caused a massive gash in the ship’s hull, leading to a loss of power and steering. The incident set off a chain of events that would leave many survivors haunted for years to come.

John and Meghan Scimone, two of the survivors, were deeply affected by the tragedy. A Netflix producer reached out to them, offering reassurance that their actions during the crisis had made a significant difference. In one emotional moment, the producer told John, “John, she survived because of you,” which brought him to tears. John had managed to save his baby daughter, Lila, during the chaos, carrying her through the treacherous corridors as the ship listed dangerously.

The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, made several critical decisions that worsened the situation. Instead of immediately informing passengers about the crash, he misled them, claiming it was just a power outage. However, the passengers quickly realized something more serious had occurred, especially when the ship began tilting.

Passengers were instructed to return to their cabins, but many ignored these orders, grabbing life jackets and heading toward the lifeboat decks. Some even called emergency services, who radioed the boat. During one of these calls, a call handler asked, “Good evening, Costa Concordia. Could you kindly tell me if you have any issues on board?” The captain responded, “Yes, affirmative, we have a blackout on board, and we’re verifying conditions,” before stating that no assistance was needed.

Later, when the call handler asked for an update, the captain admitted there was a leak on board, saying, “We are evaluating the leak.” The handler, shocked, replied, “So, it’s not just a blackout, you also have a leak?” As the boat continued to tilt and water flooded the lower decks, passengers worked together to evacuate, ignoring staff orders.

One hour after the collision, the “abandon ship” siren sounded, and people rushed to the lifeboats. However, as the ship listed past 20 degrees, the port-side lifeboats became useless. They swung inward, slamming against the side of the hull, trapping hundreds of passengers on the high side of the ship.

Many passengers swam to shore or managed to get into lifeboats, but others were not as fortunate. The delayed evacuation led to 32 deaths, with victims succumbing to asphyxiation, hypothermia, or drowning. The largest group of victims died because the crew instructed them to move to the starboard side of the ship to board lifeboats. As they walked through Deck 4, the ship suddenly rolled to that exact side.

The corridors turned vertical, like elevator shafts, with passengers either sucked down by the vortex-like water or unable to climb as it rose. Some passengers slipped off the hull and were pulled under by the force of the sinking vessel. Others tragically died after following instructions to return to their rooms, becoming trapped in elevators or their cabins.

The youngest victim, Dayana Arlotti, drowned alongside her father, William, when they slipped through a gap into the flooded interior from a tilted lifeboat muster station. Her death is a stark reminder of the chaos and confusion that defined the disaster.
