MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) celebrated a significant construction milestone on Friday with the topping out ceremony for the new Frayser-Trezevant Community School. This event marked the placement of the final steel beam at the highest point of the building, symbolizing a major step forward in the project’s development.
District leaders, community members, and construction crews came together to witness this important moment. The ceremony highlighted the collaborative effort between the school district and local residents, as well as the broader commitment to improving educational infrastructure in the area.
The new campus is being constructed on the site of the former MLK Prep School and is expected to serve students in the Frayser community starting in the fall of 2027. This new facility will provide modern learning spaces and updated resources to support student success.
MSCS Superintendent Dr. Roderick Richmond, who is a graduate of Trezevant High School, expressed his personal connection to the project. He emphasized that the new school represents a long-awaited investment in the Frayser community, which has historically faced challenges in accessing adequate educational resources.
“It’s super important to me because I’m a graduate of Trezevant High School, so I’m excited to see we’re putting a school in the Frayser community,” Richmond said. “We’ve needed a school in Frayser for a long time, so to see it come to fruition is an exciting time for me, as well as the Frayser community—a community that sometimes doesn’t receive some of the resources that they need. We want them to know that we haven’t forgotten about them, and we want this community to thrive.”
The new Frayser-Trezevant Community School is scheduled to open its doors to students in the fall of 2027. This timeline reflects the careful planning and coordination required to ensure the school meets the needs of students, families, and educators.
Key aspects of the new school include:
- Modern classrooms equipped with the latest technology to enhance the learning experience.
- Spaces designed to promote collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking among students.
- Facilities that support extracurricular activities, including sports and arts programs.
- A focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, ensuring the building is both environmentally responsible and cost-effective.
The project also includes plans for community engagement and partnerships with local organizations to support student development beyond the classroom. These initiatives aim to create a strong foundation for future generations of students in the Frayser area.
As construction continues, the community remains hopeful for the positive impact this new school will bring. The Frayser-Trezevant Community School is not just a building—it is a symbol of progress, opportunity, and investment in the future of the neighborhood.
With the topping out ceremony marking a key phase in the project, the next steps will involve completing the interior design, installing essential systems, and preparing for the grand opening in 2027. The success of this initiative will be measured not only by the physical structure but also by the lasting benefits it brings to students and families in the Frayser community.
