SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – You might have heard the roar of the US Air Force Thunderbirds before you saw them, but they’ve officially arrived in Sioux Falls on Thursday. The elite team is getting ready for an exciting performance at the Sioux Falls Air Show this weekend.

The Thunderbirds are known for their high-flying displays across the country, and they use these events to showcase the pride, precision, and professionalism of the Air Force. As one of the best teams in the military, they bring a sense of awe and excitement to every show they perform.

With their signature maneuvers and stunning aerial acrobatics, the Thunderbirds made a dramatic entrance into Sioux Falls. They’re looking forward to delivering a show that will leave audiences in awe.

“Our overall mission is to recruit, retain, and inspire, but for us, the most important part is inspiration,” said Lt. Col. Tyler Clark.

A native of South Carolina, Lt. Col. Tyler Clark is making his first visit to South Dakota. For him, being part of the Thunderbirds and traveling across the nation is a privilege. This year, he’s especially excited to be part of the demonstrations during America’s 250th birthday celebrations.

“I got to tell you, man, being on the team for America’s 250th is incredible and kind of surreal. Sometimes I have to pinch myself and think, ‘Man, this is real life right now.’ Flying the F-16 that’s painted red, white, and blue, and traveling around this amazing country during this special year—it’s great,” Clark shared.

On Saturday, visitors can expect an unforgettable experience with low-flying maneuvers, tight formations, and plenty of loud noises. The highlight of the show will be the patriotically painted F-16s, which represent the spirit of the United States.

“We’re flying, and some of these maneuvers are only eighteen inches apart, a hundred feet off the ground, going 400 to 500 miles per hour. Our margins are very small, but it makes you feel alive,” Clark explained.

While the focus is on strength and pride, Clark said meeting and inspiring others is his favorite part of the job—especially when young fans get a front-row view of the action.

“At the end of our show, we approach the fenceline to say hello to the crowd. But what really hits me is when I look below the fence and see a young boy or girl who just witnessed something incredible all day. Then I get to show them, ‘Hey, I’m also a real person, and this is something you can do when you grow up. Have dreams, dream big, and go after them,’” Clark said.

The Thunderbirds won’t be done with their performances yet. On Friday, they’ll conduct a full run-through of their routine and host the Hometown Hero event. A local resident will be honored for their community contributions and will have the rare opportunity to ride with the Thunderbirds.
