A Vibrant Week of Art and Expression

The Meridian Public School District recently wrapped up its first-ever Soundwaves: Sounds of Mississippi 2026 Summer Arts Camp, marking a significant milestone in the district’s commitment to fostering creativity among young students. The event took place on Friday, June 26, at The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience, commonly referred to as The MAX.

This free weeklong program was designed for incoming third through sixth grade students from the Meridian Public School District, offering them an immersive experience rooted in Mississippi’s rich artistic heritage. The camp aimed to provide students with a unique opportunity to explore various forms of art while connecting with their cultural roots.

Interactive Workshops and Creative Exploration

Throughout the week, students participated in a series of interactive workshops that covered music, dance, theater, and visual arts. These sessions were led by experienced MPSD instructors and local arts professionals, ensuring that participants received high-quality guidance and mentorship. Each day began with breakfast and ended with lunch, making the experience both educational and nourishing.

One of the highlights of the camp was the visit from John Jennings, a Mississippi native and New York Times bestselling graphic novelist and illustrator. Jennings shared his insights on storytelling and the arts, inspiring students with his passion and expertise. His presence added a special touch to the program, encouraging students to think deeply about the power of creative expression.

A Celebration of Talent and Culture

The camp culminated in a community showcase titled “Sounds of Mississippi: A Celebration of Music, Culture, and Creativity.” This event brought together families and community members to witness the talents of the students. Attendees were treated to performances and had the chance to view the visual artwork created during the week. It was a vibrant celebration of the students’ growth and creativity.

Dr. Antonio Altman, the Director of Arts for Meridian Public School District, emphasized the importance of the arts in helping children discover their voices and build confidence. He noted that throughout the week, students embraced new experiences in various art forms while celebrating the cultural traditions of Mississippi.

Altman also expressed his pride in witnessing the students’ growth and their willingness to share their talents with family and friends. He believes that every child has a unique gift, and the district is committed to helping them find it.

Community Collaboration and Support

The success of the inaugural Soundwaves camp was made possible through the partnership between the Meridian Public School District and The MAX. The district acknowledged the contributions of The MAX, camp instructors, staff, volunteers, community partners, and families, all of whom played a vital role in supporting the program.

This event not only provided students with a memorable experience but also highlighted the importance of community collaboration in promoting arts education. As the district looks to the future, it aims to continue expanding such programs to ensure that more students have access to the transformative power of the arts.
