Amarillo, Texas – A man was taken into custody following a shooting incident near Southwest 7th Avenue and South Carolina Street on Wednesday evening.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers were called to the area just after 9:00 p.m. after reports of gunfire. The incident occurred when a 27-year-old man named Jared Wade Johnston arrived at a residence to confront the occupants regarding his girlfriend being present.

Witnesses told police that upon arriving at the home, Johnston exited his vehicle and pointed a gun at the residents, firing at least two shots. The arrest report states that Johnston then began kicking the front door, prompting one resident to open fire in self-defense.

An exchange of gunfire took place, during which Johnston shot into an upstairs window where the defending resident was located. At the time of the incident, multiple individuals were inside the home, putting them in immediate danger.

Both firearms involved in the incident were recovered at the scene, and both parties involved were taken to the Amarillo Police Department for further questioning. During the interrogation, Johnston provided a story that did not align with the accounts given by several witnesses and contradicted himself multiple times.

Authorities have since arrested Johnston and booked him into the Potter County Jail. He faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of deadly conduct.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the incident. The investigation is still ongoing, with police continuing to gather information and review evidence related to the events that transpired.
