Reflections on a Near Tragedy
On the two-year anniversary of the assassination attempt against him in Butler, Pennsylvania, President Donald Trump shared his thoughts with a news outlet about the events that unfolded during a 2024 campaign rally. He expressed that the Secret Service made a critical error that day, which put his life at risk.
During the rally, Thomas Matthew Crooks was positioned on a rooftop approximately 150 yards away from where Trump was speaking. He fired a total of eight shots, one of which grazed Trump’s right ear. The gunfire also resulted in the death of former firefighter Corey Comperatore and critically injured two other spectators before a Secret Service countersniper shot and killed Crooks.
A Critical Mistake
Trump stated, “We watch it, and I watch it all the time. And he shouldn’t have been where he was. He should have been in no location, frankly.” He emphasized that the Secret Service made a mistake by allowing Crooks to be in that area. Despite acknowledging that the agency has done almost everything right, Trump felt this particular oversight was significant.
“The fact is that Crooks was a very disturbed young man, a very nutty man. Smart academically, by the way, but very, very disturbed. And he paid the price,” Trump added.
He praised the Secret Service countersniper for acting swiftly to neutralize the threat. “We had an antisniper, basically someone who shoots the snipers — nice, nice world we’re living in, right? But he was given 4.6 seconds. Within 4.6 seconds, he hit the sniper right between the eyes,” Trump said.
“It was amazing, actually. And he was close to 400 yards away and given no chance because, you know, I mean, frankly, we didn’t know he was up there,” he continued.
Communication and Coordination
Trump also highlighted the need for better communication between the Secret Service and local police. “That was the other thing. They should have had better communication with the local police,” he said.
He reflected on the circumstances that led to his survival. “So there were a lot of things, but in the end I was really blessed by God because I had made that little turn which was really not so little. It was exactly a 90-degree — if it wasn’t exact, the whole thing is a miracle. It’s really a miracle. It’s amazing.”
