Marie-France van Heel, the Dutch-born wife of Andy Burnham, has been a prominent figure in her husband’s political journey, though she has often chosen to remain behind the scenes. As a high-flying marketing executive, she has built a successful career while supporting her partner through his various roles, including his time as Mayor of Greater Manchester and now his return to Westminster.

When Mr. Burnham first shared his plans to run for office again, Ms. van Heel’s initial response was not entirely supportive. According to Mr. Burnham, her reaction was “probably a two-word answer… probably half-joking.” However, he noted that it took some encouragement for her to fully support his decision. Despite this, she stood by his side during the critical moments of his campaign, including the Makerfield count and the victory rally at Ashton Town football club.

Ms. van Heel, known as Frankie, met Mr. Burnham while both were students at Cambridge University’s Fitzwilliam College in 1989. Their relationship began with a shared love for music, particularly the 1980s Manchester band The Smiths. Mr. Burnham recalled how he was trying to impress the new first-year girls when he found one who shared his passion for the band. “The rest, as they say, is history,” he added.

In the early days of their relationship, Ms. van Heel appeared on the ITV show Blind Date. Viewers learned that she was studying social and political sciences, captained the college women’s football team, and had a crush on actor Matt Dillon.

Her appearance on the show, however, did not go smoothly. She chose “Will from Surrey” as her date, but the encounter turned disastrous. Cameras captured Will branding her a “cold fish,” and backstage, Frankie reportedly told him, “F*** off – I never want to see you again.” Interestingly, she would later meet Will Harris again at a Commons bar in 2003, three years after she and Mr. Burnham married.

Will Harris, who was then marketing director of the Conservative Party, had a rather ironic connection to Ms. van Heel. Despite this, she continued to focus on her career, working with major clients such as MTV and Sky. While she has largely stayed out of politics, her outspoken nature was evident when her tweets attacking her husband’s political opponents were revealed during his 2015 Labour leadership bid.

The couple moved north when Mr. Burnham became MP for Leigh in 2001, and they have three children: Jimmy, Rosie, and Annie, all now in their 20s. Throughout their journey, Ms. van Heel has remained a constant presence, offering support and guidance as her husband navigates the complexities of public life. Her role, though often behind the scenes, has been instrumental in shaping the personal and professional life of one of the UK’s most prominent politicians.
