The Most Powerful Weapons in Middle-earth

While many fans of The Lord of the Rings know the One Ring as the most powerful weapon in Middle-earth, there are several other legendary weapons that could rival its strength. These weapons, though less known, played significant roles in the history of Tolkien’s world and often surpassed the One Ring in power and impact.

Angrist: The Iron-Cleaver

Angrist was a knife forged by Telchar of Nogrod, the same Dwarven smith who created the sword Narsil. Its name meant “Iron-cleaver” in the Elvish language of Sindarin, and it was so sharp that it could cut through iron “as if it were green wood.” Originally wielded by Curufin, an Elf, it was later used by Beren, an ancestor of Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings. Beren used Angrist to cut a Silmaril out of Morgoth’s Iron Crown. Although the blade shattered while trying to remove a second gem, it managed to “smote” Morgoth’s cheek, proving its incredible sharpness. This feat was impressive, as Morgoth was one of the most powerful beings in Middle-earth.

Anglachel: The Black Sword

Anglachel, later renamed Gurthang, was a black-bladed sword forged from a meteor. In the section “Of Túrin Turambar,” Tolkien described it as “a sword of great worth” that could “cleave all earth-delved iron.” Túrin used Gurthang to slay the ancient dragon Glaurung, and it was prophesied that a resurrected Túrin would use it to kill Morgoth during the Dagor Dagorath. However, the sword was cursed by its creator, Eöl the Dark Elf, and both warriors who wielded it died upon it. Gurthang was heavily implied to be sentient, even speaking to Túrin at one point, though his mental state made this ambiguous. Regardless, its influence seemed to be even stronger than the One Ring’s.

Ringil: The Cold Blade

Compared to the other weapons on this list, Tolkien wrote little about Ringil. Its name was derived from the word ringë, meaning “cold” in the Elvish language of Quenya, and its blade resembled ice, but its origins and magical properties were left unknown. Despite this lack of detail, Ringil earned its place among Middle-earth’s mightiest weapons because High King Fingolfin wielded it in single combat against Morgoth. As described in the section “Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin,” Fingolfin used Ringil to wound Morgoth eight times, the last of which left the Dark Lord with a permanent limp.

Grond: The Hammer of the Underworld

Fans of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King will be familiar with Grond, the wolf-shaped battering ram that the Orcs used to break down the Great Gate of Minas Tirith during the Siege of Gondor. However, this was not the first Grond in Tolkien’s lore. The battering ram was named after a mace that Morgoth used in his duel with Fingolfin. Grond’s name literally meant “very weighty” in Sindarin, but it was more commonly referred to as the Hammer of the Underworld. Morgoth could change his physical form at will, so his size fluctuated, but Grond was massive to match its wielder. Every time Morgoth swung it, he “rent a mighty pit in the earth, whence smoke and fire darted.”

The Silmarils: Sacred Gems of Power

The Silmarils were not weapons in the traditional sense. In fact, they were originally meant to be objects of beauty. Galadriel’s uncle, the renowned Elven smith Fëanor, created three clear gems that captured the holy light of the Two Trees of Valinor. Varda, one of the Valar, then blessed the Silmarils so that they would burn the flesh of any evil beings who touched them. The section “Of the Flight of the Noldor” explained the damage they wrought to Morgoth: “His hands were burned black by the touch of those hallowed jewels, and black they remained ever after; nor was he ever free from the pain of the burning, and the anger of the pain.” The Silmarils were even more agonizing for the werewolf Carcharoth, who swallowed one along with Beren’s hand. The pain of the holy light burning his evil body from within drove him to madness.
