U.S. Secures Round of 32 Spot with Strong Group Stage Performance

The United States, one of the co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has already secured a spot in the Round of 32 after winning its first two matches in the group stage. The team’s performance has been impressive, with key victories that have ensured their advancement to the knockout stage.

In their second Group D match, held at Seattle Stadium on June 20 (Korean time), the U.S. defeated Australia 2-0. This result followed their earlier 4-1 win against Paraguay in the first match of the group stage. With six points from two wins, the U.S. has already guaranteed their place in the next round, regardless of the outcome of their final match against Turkey.

Despite the absence of star player Christian Pulisic due to an injury, the U.S. managed to control the game from the start. In the 11th minute of the first half, Pauline Valorin’s pass from the left flank deflected off Australian defender Cameron Burgess and went into his own net, giving the U.S. an early lead.

The U.S. continued to dominate the match and scored their second goal in the 43rd minute. After Serjino Dest’s shot hit a defender and rose in the air, Alexander Freeman headed it into the net. The initial decision was to rule the goal offside, but after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the goal was confirmed, securing the victory for the U.S.

Co-Host Nations Shine in the Tournament

The co-host nations of the tournament—United States, Mexico, and Canada—have all shown strong performances in the early stages of the competition. Mexico secured its place in the Round of 32 with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in its second match. The U.S. followed suit with its second consecutive win, solidifying its position as a strong contender.

Canada also made a significant impact, starting with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their first match. They then recorded a dominant 6-0 victory against Qatar in their second game, showcasing their offensive strength and potential for success in the tournament.
