Burundi Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity

On Friday, the Republic of Burundi once again expressed its strong and consistent support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over all its territories, including the Sahara region. This commitment was clearly stated in a joint communiqué released after discussions between Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and Development Cooperation, Édouard Bizimana, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.

During his working visit to the Kingdom of Morocco, Burundi’s top diplomat emphasized his country’s unwavering backing for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco. He described this initiative as the only credible and realistic solution to the ongoing regional dispute. Additionally, he expressed full support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations based on the autonomy plan.

Key Points from the Joint Communiqué

  • Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty: Burundi reaffirmed its commitment to Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over all its regions, including the Sahara.
  • Autonomy Plan Endorsement: The Burundian minister praised Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most viable solution to the dispute.
  • UN Involvement: Burundi supported the role of the UN Secretary-General and his envoy in promoting dialogue and negotiations centered around the autonomy plan.

Positive Reception of UN Security Council Resolution 2797

Burundi expressed significant satisfaction with the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797. This resolution recognizes the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the foundation for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable settlement of the dispute. The resolution is seen as a major step forward in international efforts to resolve the long-standing conflict in the region.

Broader Implications

The statements made by Burundi highlight the growing international recognition of Morocco’s position on the Western Sahara issue. By aligning itself with Morocco’s stance, Burundi is reinforcing the idea that the autonomy plan represents a practical and sustainable path toward peace and stability in the region.

This development also underscores the importance of multilateral diplomacy in addressing complex geopolitical issues. The involvement of the United Nations and the support of countries like Burundi play a crucial role in shaping the global narrative around the Western Sahara dispute.

Conclusion

The reaffirmation of support by Burundi for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy plan marks an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the Western Sahara conflict. As the international community continues to engage with the issue, the focus remains on finding a solution that respects the rights and aspirations of all parties involved.
