Taiwanese Woman Loses 13kg and Half Her Visceral Fat in 16 Weeks Without Cravings

A 50-year-old woman from Taiwan successfully lost nearly 13 kilograms and significantly reduced her visceral fat in just 16 weeks through a doctor-supervised program that focused on improving sleep, balancing hormones, and adopting healthier eating habits rather than simply fighting cravings.
Dr. Hsu Shu-hua, a general practitioner based in Taiwan who specializes in obesity and weight management, shared the patient’s journey on Facebook on June 16. The patient, identified as Zhang, had struggled with weight gain over the years due to intense work stress, which worsened after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a local news outlet, her weight increased to 80.4 kg, leading to significant strain on her knees and persistent pain. Additionally, chronic stress disrupted her eating habits, causing constant hunger and further weight gain.

Dr. Hsu diagnosed Zhang with “stress-induced visceral obesity,” explaining that prolonged stress leads to elevated cortisol levels, which encourage fat to accumulate around the abdomen and internal organs. Excess visceral fat is associated with chronic inflammation, impaired insulin function, and leptin resistance, making it harder for the brain to recognize fullness and easier for fat to persist.
Instead of recommending extreme dieting, Dr. Hsu warned that fasting while dealing with knee pain and limited mobility could further slow metabolism by pushing the body into a survival state, reducing its ability to burn fat.
Over a 16-week treatment plan, Zhang gradually rebuilt healthy daily habits, including:
- Drinking enough water to support metabolic functions and reduce appetite
- Improving deep sleep to regulate hormonal balance and promote recovery
- Making smarter food choices to avoid processed and high-sugar foods
- Adjusting the nutritional balance of each meal to ensure proper nutrient intake
- Managing the timing of carbohydrate consumption and portion sizes when dining out, allowing her to enjoy food while still losing weight
By the end of the program, Zhang’s weight had dropped from 80.4 kg to 67.5 kg. Her body fat percentage decreased from 38.6% to 28.4%, and her visceral fat level fell from a high-risk 14 to 7.
According to Dr. Hsu, reducing visceral fat is crucial because excess fat surrounding internal organs is closely linked to several serious health conditions, including metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, elevated blood lipids, and diabetes. Zhang’s metabolic blood markers also improved significantly during the treatment period.
Dr. Hsu emphasized that sustainable weight loss is not achieved by relying on willpower to fight cravings but by restoring the body’s hormonal balance. Once sleep quality improves, inflammation decreases, and metabolism functions normally again, the body can naturally move toward a healthier weight.
This case highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of weight gain, such as stress and poor lifestyle habits, rather than focusing solely on calorie restriction or quick fixes. By adopting a holistic approach that includes better sleep, balanced nutrition, and stress management, individuals can achieve long-term health improvements and maintain a healthier weight.
