South Korea’s fencing star Oh Sang-uk, representing Daejeon City Hall, made a triumphant return to the top of the podium at the Asian Championships after a two-year absence. His victory was not only significant in terms of achievement but also marked a moment of resilience and adaptability as he competed using borrowed equipment.
In the men’s sabre individual final on June 19 in Delhi, India, Oh showcased his skill and determination by defeating Luo Xiaotong of China with a score of 15–8. This win secured him his first individual gold medal at the Asian Championships since 2024, marking a personal milestone and a strong statement for South Korean fencing.
The road to this victory was not without its challenges. The Korean fencing team faced a series of logistical hurdles before the tournament. The Seoul Songpa-gu Olympic Park Handball Gymnasium, which houses the Korean Fencing Federation’s office, was closed due to protests over a shortage of local election ballot papers. This closure disrupted normal operations, making it difficult for team members to access their usual training facilities and equipment.
As a result, several athletes, including Oh, had to transport their own gear manually and even resorted to borrowing equipment from their respective teams. Despite these obstacles, Oh remained focused and managed to compete effectively, demonstrating the strength of his character and commitment to the sport.
Throughout the tournament, Oh displayed consistent performance and tactical precision. In the round of 32, he narrowly defeated Karan Singh of India with a score of 15–11. He then advanced to the round of 16 by overcoming Islambek Abdazhov of Uzbekistan with a score of 15–6.
In the quarterfinals, Oh faced Kokubo Mao of Japan and emerged victorious with a score of 15–12. His path to the final was further tested when he met Do Kyung-dong of Daegu City Hall, the reigning individual champion from the previous year. Oh prevailed in a close match with a final score of 15–9, securing his place in the final. Do Kyung-dong went on to claim the bronze medal, earning his second consecutive individual medal at the Asian Championships.
Oh’s journey to victory was a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and the spirit of competition. His success not only highlighted his personal growth as an athlete but also underscored the importance of teamwork and support within the Korean fencing community.
